8 Essentials For Breastfeeding

Hi Everyone, I have been exclusively breastfeeding Baby Jasper for nearly 7 months now so I thought I would share my essentials for feeding. I have found that these are the items that have made my breastfeeding journey much easier and more enjoyable!

  1. Nursing bras and tops – Breastfeeding babies usually feed on demand and they don’t have a set routine as they can’t be overfed, so easy access to your babies food source is essential. Also with these items you can do the ‘one up one down’ method where you wear two tops one of which goes up for feeding and one that goes down which allows you to feed your baby without anything on show.
  2. Breast pads – I found that during the early days of feeding disposable breast pads were great at collecting leakages because they needed to be changed so often. However I have found that once my milk supply was established reusable breast pads have worked well and have the benefit of being a bit more environmentally friendly.
  3. Muslins – I always like to have muslins on hand whilst feeding as they can be used to mop up anything from milk to sick.
  4. Nursing pillow – Great for supporting the baby whilst feeding to stop you getting a sore back!
  5. Collection cups – I only discovered breast milk collection cups about 4 months in to my breastfeeding journey and they have quickly become an essential item for me. You simply pop one in to your bra on the side you are not feeding from and let it collect milk. I find them a great way of collecting milk without having to express and I also like that the milk is not being wasted. I then use the collected milk to mix with Jasper’s food during weaning.
  6. Water and snacks – Hydration and nourishment are essential during breastfeeding to produce good quality milk so having a water bottle and healthy easy to eat snacks to have whilst feeding are important.
  7. A good Boxset – In the early days of breastfeeding, babies feed a lot to help establish a good milk supply. So it is useful to have a good boxset ready to keep you entertained as you will spend a while sat down feeding.
  8. Nipple cream and shields – These are essentials for most people in the early days because it can be quite sore as breastfeeding is getting established. I didn’t need these in the end, I guess I must have leathery nipples!

I hope these breastfeeding essentials are useful for you and good luck on your breastfeeding journeys! I would love to know if you have any other things you consider essentials for breastfeeding and also please leave a comment if you would like to see more posts about breastfeeding.

Thanks for reading, Jen x

  2. Great read hun, I’m the same as you I don’t need shields either. Collection cups are a God send when you are expressing as well as feeding as you can lose between 1-3 oz depending on your supply I’ve found and if you can save it all the better. Thanks for sharing hun πŸ™‚
